Signing Friends Cadette/Senior Girl Scout IPP

The creation of this badge was a Silver Award Project by Elizabeth N. Rouse, Cadette Girl Scout, Troop 63, Mount Laurel, NJ, 1992.
To earn this IPP you must complete eight (8) activities, including the five that are **starred.**

- **Learn about the origin/history of the American Manual Alphabet and American Sign Language (ASL).**
- **Be able to explain the difference between the following types of manual languages:**
American Sign Language (ASL)
Signed English
Signed Exact English
- **Learn the American Manual Alphabet and understand its role in manual communication. Practice finger spelling with a partner until you can fluently spell your name, the town in which you live, and the names of five friends.**
- **Learn the Girl Scout Promise or Girl Scout Law in sign language. Share this with a group.**
- **Do a related service project, e.g. volunteer at a school where deaf children are taught, or volunteer to hold an activity time for deaf children.**
- Learn about operating a TTD or TTY and place at least one phone call using same.
- Choose a category (e.g. relatives, animals, foods, feelings, etc.). Using ASL, be able to sign at least ten words from your chosen category.
- Plan a signed ceremony, e.g. flag ceremony including the Pledge of Allegiance, Girl Scout Promise, and song.
- Learn three simple songs in ASL and teach them to a group.
- Learn to count using ASL.
- Read a book about someone who is deaf or who has a hearing problem.
- Visit with someone who is deaf or who has a deaf relative. Plan some questions to ask before the visit.
- Plan a simple signed conversation.
- Keep a scrapbook about situations involving the deaf community, e.g. newspaper articles, stories, new advances. Share this with a group.
- Take a short trip wearing earplugs. Take a friend for safety. Then reverse roles. Share what you learned from your experience.
