In the mid-1800s, in the town of Skapiškis, in northern Lithuania, there lived an ordinary Jewish couple named Yisrael and Sheine Esther Bris. Like all Jews of Imperial Russia, they endured decades of oppression, violence, instability, and poverty, and still managed to raise a family. Between the years of 1847 and 1874 they had five children, shown above, who lived to raise families of their own. At the turn of the century, many of the Brises' 27 grandchildren joined the great emigrations out of Europe, seeking brighter futures in South Africa and the United States.
Today, more than 400 descendants of Yisrael and Sheine Esther live around the world. This website tells the ongoing story of more than 180 years of the Briss Family's history. Welcome, cousins, and enjoy!
